[NEWS] G-Dragon Talks about His Tour and Promotion on Naver “Star Column”
Hello!!! Star column readers, this is G-dragon. During Bigbang’s world tour I wrote about BTS stories with our members but now I’m by myself. However I’m not lonely because Bigbang will always be one. They will always be my reliable partner, friend, and supporter.
I will do my best on my solo world tour. And in this column, I will talk about my relationship with YG sajangnim who always looks after me like my brother, my daily life and hobbies, and my dream. Please enjoy reading it.^^
Since I was little, I never had any fears or tensions about going on the stage. Bigbang worked on concerts more than TV shows so we shouldn’t fear standing on the stage since we’re so used to it. We already have experiences with world tours as well. So there’s nothing really different about solo word tour. But when I go out of Korea to do world tour it sure is tough. But thinking about other artists that don’t have the chance to have a world tour makes me feel thankful about the struggles. And it hasn’t been long since we started this world tour so it’s all good so far.
Of course it’s physically tiring but we have this thing called “Stage addiction.” Even when you’re tired, you get energetic on stage. Since so many audiences are looking at me. It’s the same doing a photoshoot or a MV shooting. When so many staffs are working for me, I shouldn’t be turning them down just because of my bad condition.
Actually when I’m full of energy and when I take away the energy from staffs or fans, a photoshoot or a concert comes out well but when I lack in energy or it’s dead, I usually don’t make a satisfying stage. But no matter what, I get good energy when I go on the stage. Even when I feel sick, it feels a lot better. I think that’s how other singers feel going on the stage as well.
During world tour out members and I enjoy street shopping. I especially shop a lot since I love clothes and since each country has its unique characteristics. So I just look around major fashion streets in those countries.
When I’m REALLY tired after performances, my way to restore myself is to take a lower body bath watching movies and dramas, saying nothing and staying still for 10 to 15 mins. That’s my time of healing.
I get many inspirations from movies. Few days ago I watched the movie ”New world.” I met the main actor Hwang Jung Min hyung at MAMA awards and we exchanged numbers but we couldn’t contact each other that often. He invited me to his movie preview but I watched it at the theatres due to my schedule and I really liked it. So in return, I invited Hwang Jung Min sunbae to my concert and I’m very happy to hear that he enjoyed it.
I don’t really feel attracted to people who are cool and normal.

Things that will not change even in the future and treasure is…. ?!
OS: So, in “Sunny Hill”, there is a sentence that says “something that is called treasure”, what is D-LITE san’s treasure and most important thing?
D-LITE: Of course it is all my fans. In the path of walking here I met many different obstacles and hurdles that I need to overcome, but all my fans gave me huge energy. The completion of my album this time is also anticipated by many, so to return the fans love, I worked hard with the thought of repaying my fans and creating a good piece of work. Without support from them, I don’t think the album can be completed, I don’t even think I could survive being Bigbang’s D-LITE. I really really am very thankful to all my fans. Thank you. Also, my family is also my treasure, so I thank them from my heart as well, but because I am too shy, I can’t say it out loud… (wry smile). However, the relationship in my family is very good!
OS: Just to ask, D-LITE san has an elder sister. Have both of you tried quarreling hugely?
D-LITE: When I was in elementary school I quarreled with her every day. It was all about small matters. For example, “Noona what do you want to eat?” “Uhhh…” “Noona what do you want?” “Uhhh..” like this, no matter how many times I asked she will always reply me with “Uhh…” It can go on for 2-30 times with just an “Uhh..”, after that I stated angrily that she doesn’t need to do that already but she still continued it. I wanted my sister to acknowledge me but she was always very cold (wry smile).
OS: Your elder sister is very mature.
D-LITE: For me, I really want to quarrel with my sister loudly, but now that I think again, the sister who handled it so calmly and in a mature way is really clever. Ah, however, whenever my sister eats the ham and sausage that I want to eat, I will still think she is too much (laugh). There are strict household rules in the family, for the sake of health, we will usually have many healthy food for our 3 meals like beans and vegetables. Meat like ham or sausage can only be eaten occasionally. So when I see ham being placed on the table I will feel very happy but my sister will always take my ham whenever I am busy eating something else (laugh). Even if I say angrily “this is my ham!” but she will say “huh? What did you say?”, as if nothing has happened.

OS: Previously we talked about serious topics like “D’scover”, for today we will talk about lighter topics.
D-LITE: Because I am D-LITE (LIGHT) (laugh).
OS: Ahahaha. So, we will continue on with this type of feel.
D-LITE: Eh? Is it really ok like this?
OS: Half serious and half playing…
D-LITE: Ah~ It became difficult (laugh).
OS: No no, we will just follow D-LITE’s gut feeling. How is D-LITE, just talk about some experiences or stories that allows us to know your character.
D-LITE: Ah~ Ok, I understand. I will try. (Do it over again) Please guide me through.
OS: Yes sure. Then, for “Love” lyrics, there is a line that says “I can’t see it with my naked eyes so I don’t believe in love”, things that cannot be seen by our naked eyes like ghosts, do you believe it?
D-LITE: Yes, I believe. Ghosts… are very scary… (laugh)
OS: During Bigbang’s tour, you have to stay in hotels all around the world; did you ever experience not being able to sleep due to any weird movements or horror?
D-LITE: That I didn’t experience. The truth is, I did not see anything with my eyes at all… Precisely like this, all the horror images are conjured up by my own heart, which makes it scarier (laugh). But up till now, there has not been a case where I could not sleep, but when I was younger I will be afraid to sleep alone.
OS: Might as well say that you are sleeping better now?
D-LITE: Yes. When I sleep I don’t play music, I will let my room be pitch dark and I wouldn’t think of anything and just sleep. The feeling when I wake up is also good. What I mean is, I will wake up naturally after 6 hours of sleep. However, if I can continue to sleep, I will also fall back to sleep immediately (laugh).

Bigbang’s vocal D-LITE san will be releasing his solo debut cover album “D’scover” on the 27th of February. It includes J-pop songs personally selected by him. With his album, D-LITE will be crossing 2 cities and holding 4 live concerts and the live tour has already received 44,000 ticket applications. All tickets for his concert have actually been sold out prior to this interview. Not losing out to the stress and anticipation brought by the surroundings, his face that has a smile that never fades with a motto of “being strict to yourself”, what is his strongest secret?
D-LITE san uses his strong yet warm voice and gentle smile to envelope our hearts. For his first solo album, he has collected songs that represent his character.
ANAN: This is an album that lets people feel warm-hearted.
D-LITE: Thank you. I sang imagining about the warmth in a mother’s belly. One of the songs I like very much is “Sunny Hill. To overcome the huge obstacle in front so my energy will be unleashed, I will listen to the song every morning. The lyric “The pain now will one day become important memories” has a common point with “Wings” lyrics which was composed by G-dragon. When Bigbang was in difficult times, we hoped to share the same heart with our fans and sing “The day where we laugh again will be back one day, no problem”.
ANAN: The recording was done during the World Tour period right.
D-LITE: To be honest, it was so tough I once thought of giving up and there was also stress. However solo is different from Bigbang. In that song it is my entire story. I faced it seriously and completed a piece of work that I am satisfied with. The energy spent on work is really big.
ANAN: You’re no doubt a Korean Guy! Is it especially so for singers that tough energy is necessary?
D-LITE: Yes. I personally think that a singer is like an elevator that always runs up and down every day. No matter how much I run I might only be closer to the destination by a little. Even if the final destination is right in front of me, if I relax a little it will drop again. That is most dangerous. So I cannot help it but to run with all my might every second. At least I am always retaining this frame of mind.

Bigbang’s D-LITE has finally debuted in Japan with his highly anticipated solo album on the 27th of February! To celebrate his solo debut career we have started a short installment for D-LITE! Other than the album, we will also be talking about the importance of the song lyrics and how close it is to D-LITE’s character!
Vol.1 There is uneasiness and stress for my first solo! The suggestion V.I. gave me was also…..
Oricon Style (OS): For your solo album “D’scover”, you have collated the precious J-pop cover albums. There’s not only male singers songs like Saito Kazuyoshi’s “Singer’s Ballad” and Sukima Switch “Powerful Boy” but also female singers like Ikimono-gakari’s “Joyful”, not only are there solo songs but also songs from groups… you have collated so many colourful music, how did you select it?
D-LITE: From the list of 100 recommended songs, I did try singing all of it, but in the end I still selected songs that I really wanted to sing purely. Firstly, I listened to the audio version to understand the impression of the original song, then I will search for videos to observe the singer’s message and mood, then I will see if anybody else did a cover of that song and I will search it out and listen to it… if time permits. I have experienced everything related to the songs, from audio to video to covers. If at any point of time, I feel that there is a different feeling from me, the singer’s posture or we do not have the same view, I will then think that is a song that cannot be covered. Feeling the colors of the person, then what do I do with my own colors? I will think this way. Now that I have the chance to do a cover, I have to add my colors in properly if not I will be disappointing the listeners. I really considered many factors in this area, I listened too many times for the songs till it would be bad if I continued listening (laugh). I wanted to guide my own colors out and I did a lot of effort for it, however I am so satisfied because I have a piece of work that I am happy with.
OS: Any stress or uneasiness for your first solo?
D-LITE: Yes. To be honest, there’s a lot at the start. Am I able to sing out my feelings well with Japanese? I think singing and expressing its feelings is the most important thing, however I noticed that my Japanese pronunciation sounded unnatural, and I had to add in my own feelings too… so I was thinking of many things while recording. Also, Bigbang’s world tour was happening at the same time as well, so my mind became a mess (laugh), it was really tough. However, during the recording, I constantly hear people around me telling me that it is very good so all the uneasiness that I carried with me disappeared naturally.
OS: What is the difference recording as Bigbang’s D-LITE and solo artist D-LITE?
D-LITE: With Bigbang, because it will not be my voice from the start till end of the song, so I have to listen to how the member before me sang it, how he used his voice and what atmosphere was it in, to let the switching of voices be smooth, I have to consider tweaking my voice tone etc. However, for my solo album, each song contains my stories, so from the start till the end, I had to ask myself constantly what I am trying to express, and I have to sing together with my thoughts of how to present it and how I want to present it constantly in my mind. Q: There was a time when it was awkward(embarrassing) being an MC on Japan Live shows. Yes or No?
D-LITE: Yes! When we weren’t that funny (laughs). Most of the time, for MC, V.I(Seungri) prepares popular jokes of Japan and tells us to do it but when the audience are just blankly staring~ (imitates face), I think to myself, Quickly move on to the next song!!! But when we don’t have V.I., we are really bad at being MCs. (Laughs) It’s a good team work!
Q: If you could be one for a week, which one? A. manager B. 2NE1’s manager?
D-LITE: A! Bigbang’s private life is even funny in my personal opinion. If I become a manager, hardest person to deal with would be TOP-san (In a low voice). He’s always late getting ready and he likes red wine so I think he would ask me to drink with him every night (Laughs). Since 2NE1 are ladies, I don’t know much and I would have to protect them more so it would be harder.
Q: If you could date one, which one? A. Good-listener B. Good-talker
D-LITE: A good-talker. I love talking as well but I love saying, “Yes, yes” and listening to someone who’s always by my side talking.♡
Q: Women type that makes your heart pound? A. Someone who is considerate B. Someone who is sloppy
D-LITE: A. I like woman who I can grow with. I think sloppy women would be lovely too but I might not like them that much (Laughs). Me? I’m not sloppy!
Q: If you’re girlfriend asks you to match outfits with her (Couple-look)? Yes or No?
D-LITE: ….Yes (In a disliking voice). Honestly it’s a little embarrassing so I don’t like it that much~ If I do match, I like something that’s not that noticeable. Like rings or socks. You can’t see matching socks (laughs).

ZIPPER: You have finally completed your solo album!
D-LITE: Thank you. During the production process, the other members were not with me, I was doing it alone, so I felt lonely. However, due to the help of our good staff, the work is done satisfactorily!!
ZIPPER: It’s a J-pop cover album, what are the rules you go by for selecting the songs?
D-LITE: At the start I listened to about 200 J-pop songs then selected those songs that made an impression in my heart. Thus, the songs in this album are like “KING OF J-POP” to me (laugh). Every song will make your heart warm, so I try to let my voice sing it out so the warmth will not disappear.
ZIPPER: Which is the song you felt most happy when singing?
D-LITE: It is “Joyful”. Even with Bigbang we did not sing songs like this before, so it feels very fresh. When singing this song I was brought back to my childhood times. I let go of myself and sang this song by enjoying it, so if this atmosphere is able to infect everyone I will be very happy.

Choosing songs based on my gut feelings
Bigbang, a worldwide group continuing to grow after experiencing one and a half years of ALIVE WORLD TOUR. Amongst the members there is also someone who shines for his powerful and warmth voice, vocal D-LITE, will be collating J-pop famous songs for his cover album as his solo debut in Japan!
D-LITE: I have always been interested in J-pop since our activities in Korea, so I was really excited when I was given the suggestion to do a cover album. I definitely feel uneasy for using my Japanese to pronounce these words, however after listening many times to the original songs, I have also mastered the difference between the languages.
D-LITE used about two months to choose the 10 songs he is going to cover. This is really the D-LITE style, as he always uses a sincere attitude to face music.
D-LITE: I chose songs based on my gut feeling once I hear the music. For “Singer’s Ballad”, I found it on Youtube by accident, and it is a song that holds deep memories. As I watched Mr.Children san’s Kazutoshi Sakurai and Hideya Suzuki’s cover of that song, I felt really touched. There are also songs recommended by members. MISIA san’s “Missing You Now” was introduced to me by V.I. who were also doing his Japanese activities.
D-LITE has also decided to hold a ONE MAN LIVE in Kobe and Tokyo for the first time. There are ongoing preparations now.
D-LITE: I think live is the most important for every artist. However the details are still a secret (laugh), but it will be a live performance that you won’t regret coming, so please look forward to it!
